Understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) in early childhood
Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex behavioural profile that can appear in early childhood, often presenting unique challenges for children, families, and educators.
Children with PDA may go to great lengths to avoid ordinary requests or demands, not out of defiance but due to overwhelming anxiety. This avoidance can manifest as distraction, making excuses, withdrawing, or even sudden outbursts. Unlike other oppositional behaviours, PDA is rooted in the child’s need to feel safe and in control of their environment.
Early signs and impact
In early childhood, PDA can affect social interactions, learning, and family life. Children might struggle with transitions, find it hard to follow routines, or resist participating in group activities. These behaviours can sometimes be misunderstood, leading to frustration for both the child and caregivers.
Supporting children with PDA
Early intervention is critical, and understanding a child’s need for autonomy and reducing pressure can help build trust and cooperation. Strategies often include flexible approaches, offering choices, and using indirect language to reduce the feeling of demands. Collaboration between families, educators, and ECI professionals is key to creating supportive environments where children with PDA can thrive.
