Early childhood intervention (ECI) practitioners work in partnership with each family, using family centred practice principles. They work in mutually supportive teams, minimising the number of professional relationships the child and family require, in order to address their goals.
In some early childhood intervention services (ECIS), the teams work through key workers (or lead practitioners), who are coached or directly supported by team members from relevant disciplines, as needed.
Practitioners’ professional backgrounds and prior professional experiences are diverse. The professions from which ECI practitioners are drawn include:
- Early childhood education (special education)
- Developmental educator
- Speech pathology
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational therapy
- Psychology
- Music, art and play therapy
- Social work
- Dietician, etc.
