Robust Hope: Finding a home for early childhood intervention in the new early years landscape - Associate Professor Christine Johnston

The aim in this paper, is to look briefly at the journey we have all been on in early childhood intervention in Australia, to explore the current early years landscape and to put forward some ideas about where we might find a home for our field, our families and ourselves in this new environment. Parallel processes: Common features of effective parenting, human services, management and government - Dr Tim Moore

This paper proposes that there are features that are common to effective relationships between parents/caregivers and young children, human service providers and parents, managers and staff, services and communities and governments and services. These form a cascade of parallel processes. These commonalities can be seen when one looks at the key features of effective parenting/caregiving of infants, interventions with children with disabilities, family-centred practice, core helping and counselling skills, staff management and supervision and community-centred practice. Stretching Expertise and Dollars: Communities of Learning for ECIS Practitioners - Julie Barber and Jeff Tyson

In January, 2006, a 12 month project Promoting Excellence in Early Childhood Intervention commenced in the Northern catchment of the North and Western Metropolitan region. This project is funded through the Community Sector Investment Fund (CSIF) which was established by the Victorian Department of Human Services in 2003. Read more...

I just want my child to be invited to a birthday party! User friendly strategies to promote social inclusion - Denise Batchelor and Jenni Salathiel

Due to our interest in the social inclusion of young children with disabilities within community early childhood settings (ECS), a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted. We found while strategies to promote social interaction and acceptance between children with a disability and their peers were clearly identified and documented, they were not widely employed within ECS programs. From Neural Plasticity to Family Centred Practice: An Occupational Therapist's Journey... - Anoo Bhopti

Neural Plasticity concerns the property of neural circuitry to potentially acquire any function (given appropriate training). Plasticity can be defined as adaptive phenomena that occur when structural changes coincide with functional modification or the ability of cells to alter any aspect of their phenotype, at any stage in development, in response to changes in their state or environment. Family Networks: When parents get together magic happens! - Sue Bray and Ann Slater

International and local evidence strongly indicates that the platform for long term family functioning is developed early in the parenting years. However, Early Childhood Intervention has developed as a system that is primarily focussed on working with the child and their disability. To support families we need a system that compliments current child centred practice with successful strategies to empower parents. Read more...

Pre-schoolers with autism: A parent-based education and skills training intervention. Long term follow up of a radomised controlled trial* - Kerry Bull

*with permission: Dr Avil V Brereton, Prof Bruce J Tonge, Melissa C Kiomall, Prof Neville King

Early intervention is promoted in the management of autism but little empirical evidence exists to support which, if any, of its components might be effective. This project investigated a range of child and parent outcomes of a 20 week parent-based education and skills management programme for the parents of young children (3-5 years) recently diagnosed with DSM-IV Autistic Disorder. Early G.O.A.L.S: A model of support for families of young children at risk of, or with problem behaviour - Dr Susana Gavidia-Payne, Lana-Joy Durik and Kate Neilsen

Existing knowledge about how to effectively support families of children with delays/disabilities who are at risk of, or present problem behaviour has a long research tradition. Studies have generated valid and reliable supports and interventions, especially for families of school age children. Read more...

What are the Challenges and the Choices for Early Childhood Intervention Services in implementing change? - Pauline Kleinitz and Leonie Symes

A vision for the provision of more effective early childhood intervention (ECI) services is firmly taking shape. Research emanating from around the world is helping to shape and deliver this vision. Contributions closer to home (ECIA 2005; DHS 2003; PCAC 2004; ECIA 2003) are also creating clear directions for ECI services. Read more...

Early intervention with premature infants and their parents: Three information-based approaches - Carol Newnham

Very preterm children are at high risk for developmental difficulties; almost half of these children will have mild-moderate problems. Early intervention has been shown to be efficacious in improving short and medium term outcomes for high-risk children and also for those with known difficulties. Read more...

An investigation of a home-based intervention program for children with developmental problems and their families - Dr Anne Rickards, Janet Walstab, Jacquie Simpson and Assoc Prof Dinah Reddihough

Early childhood intervention for preschool children with developmental delays and disabilities has a positive outcome for the children and their families. Meta analyses undertaken by Castro and Mastropieri and Shonkoff and Hauser-Cramm have found positive outcomes for a range of variables (Castro and Mastropieri, 1986, Shonkoff and Hauser-Cramm, 1987). However, many unanswered questions remain about the model and intensity of service delivery. Read more...
