Early Childhood Intervention Awareness Week Chronicles

Early Childhood Intervention Awareness Week

12th - 20th August, 2006

National Early Childhood Intervention Awareness Week is an opportunity to promote knowledge regarding services and needs in the early childhood intervention field and is also an opportunity to celebrate achievements. This year ECIA(VC) activities included the Manager's Network meeting, a one day mini conference and Kites for Special Kids day. Individual agencies also organised their own activities - kite flying, morning teas and open days. Resources to assist agencies plan events and promote ECI are provided below - consider them in planning for National ECI Awareness week in 2007.

Kites for Special Kids Sunday 20th August 2006

While the weather has been unpredictable in past years, this years day was clear and sunny. Promotion within the ECI Network and with local agencies resulted in a high attendance. Over 80 people attended and enjoyed making kites, flying kites, the jumping castle, clown and picnic at Royal Park, Parkville.

ECIA(VC) Kites for Special Kids - 21 August, 2005

They had predicted rain all week!! BUT the rain stayed away for Kites for Special Kids this year. While the weather kept some families away, those who came enjoyed and stayed, despite the cold. Next year the flier will include a telephone contact so that, in the event of inclement weather, interested families can 'check in about the event' on the day.

A good level of wind (!!!) meant successful kite flying for the 20 - 30 children and their families, who braved the elements and ventured to Royal Park, Parkville. The kite making and flying activities, jumping castle, picnics, music and parachute games were well appreciated by those who attended.

Yooralla help timely

The Carbone family of Sasafras was sent into a spin when their second daughter Ruby was born with Down syndrome 18 months ago. Despite being a nurse, mother Yvonne said it was hard getting used to the reality of having to raise a disabled child with extra needs. "We knew how to love and look after our baby girl, but we didn't know what, how and where to get information concerning her additional needs," Mrs Carbone said.
